Une autre journée pour se balader dans Barcelone tout en travaillant…..

A great meeting in the morning with my friend Oriol (PERQUÈ EL VI SIGUI A LA TAULA CADA DIA)…. a glass of Catalan red wine and un “entrepà de butifara blanca” while having a nice chat in a typical “bar”…..  Driving up and down town, it’s quite hilly here ! Un rendez vous avec mon ami Oriol (PERQUÈ EL VI SIGUI A LA TAULA CADA DIA….un verre de rouge catalan avec un sandwich au boudin blanc (spécialité) tout en discutant… puis balade en voiture dans cette villa qui monte et descends sans cesse….

Sarrià... time for a tasting and a nice lunch !  A few glasses of a young “rioja” while waiting for my friend. The restaurant has been decorated by my friend Laia Armengol. She introduced me to Isidre as she enjoyed so much “Sirenes de Cadaqués”…. Sarrià .. temps pour la dégustation. un petit verre de rioja avec une tortilla pour se faire la bouche en attendant…. le restaurant est trés sympa et décoré par mon amie Laia Armengol qui m’a présenté le patron, Isidre.  

Great Isidre arrives in time ( i.e; less than 30 min late..) , I open the bottle of wine, explain it and we both taste and drink it. I offer a glass of wine to a friend of Isidre too… STRESS at its peak, although I try not to show it too much… a look in the eyes, a few words, agreed.. I feel VERY happy as the place is nice and the cooking too. The whole wine list seems to be coming from  the leading wholesaler. It is always difficult for a restaurant to take a wine they like and create a new account, etc…. Isidre phones straight away to his printer to add “Sirenes de Cadaqués” on next edition… It’s great and I hope the wine will have some success.

Dégustation avec Isidre, j’ouvre la bouteille de “Sirenes”.. suspens….OOOuuuufffff le vin plait au patron et ses amis !  C’est un endroit ou l’on se sent bien de suite, dommage que presque tous les vins viennent du plus gros fournisseur catalan. On passes à une des petites table pour manger des tapas, toutes les unes plus bonnes que les autres….

More friends join Isidre, and we seat at the “tapas bar”, enjoying what is left of the white wine and try also “Pirata” that we all enjoyed….  ”Pirata” aussi est ouvert et plait beaucoup…une nouveauté pour le printemps ??

FINALEMENT….un lieu ou l’on peut boire de bons canons, de vrais coups de pifs, s’en jeter derrière le gosier, en descendre 2 ou 3, se rincer le gosier, s’en mettre un derrière la cravate, écluser quelques godets, s’en siroter un bon, s’en siffler quelques un, sécher quelques quilles, bref …… BOIRE BON et surtout ne plus voir cette sempiternelle “liste des 50 incontournables” de la dictature du soit disant “bon gout d’Espagne” !

FINALLY.. a place where you can drink, have a few booz, white, red, bubbles, name it ….they will have it… BUT only good stuff and no stuffy or posh names and certainly not these “50 typical wines from the Fanco Period” that are killing the local consumption…  :)))

Au pied du centre historique de Girona, histoire de se culturer tout en sifflant des canons quand la bourgeoise vas faire griller la CB, ce nouvel établissement tenu par Don Carlos de Catalunya, Duc de Bourgogne et “Grand écluseur” devant l’éternel a ouvert avec son comparse Roger ( un Català del meu poble…) le bar à vins  ”Plaça del Vi”….

In the historical city center of Girona – which is beautiful – you can kill a few bottles while She is out shopping. This place run by Don Carlos de Catalunya, Duke of Burgundy & ”Grand écluseur”  with his partner Roger De Catalunya ( whose family has origins in my village of Cadaqués) THE WINE BAR .. “plaça del Vi”…

Rien en apparence ne semble extraordinaire, simple, sobre, mais déjà un sourire et des mots sympathiques de bienvenue. Suis je bien en Catalogne? chez moi à Cadaqués l’accueil est “légèrement” différent ))) j’avais oublié que les catalans pouvaient aussi être aimables, souriants, rieurs, etc… bref un peu de baume à mon coeur Català !!

Nothing seams out of this world, it is simple, just nice, but a nice and warm welcome which is rare…. Am I in Catalunya? In my hometown of Cadaqués the welcome is so freezing…. I had forgotten Catalans could be so nice, so friendly and passionate about their country… So it isa nice warm reconfort for my Catalan heart ! 

Quelques gorgeons pour décrasser le gosier, l’embarras du choix de bons blancs de Catalogne ou d’ailleurs au verre ou à la bouteille pour commencer?  A few buzz to clean the palate, just too many good Catalan dry white or from elsewhere… or shall we have a bottle to start with?

Désolé les gambas de Palamos sont déjà finies….Les plats défilent envoyés sous la houlette de Don Carlos et les bouteilles tombent comme à la parade…. Tout ce que j’ai pu manger, au cours de ces quelques repas, est délicieux: du goût ( comme dans de bonnes trattoria d’Italie, ou troquets de Bourgogne ou de Lyon….) , des portions raisonnables, des recettes Catalanes parfaitement adaptées…. rien que du plaisir et plein d’émotions. Gambas from Palamos,etc… Bottoms up, bottles are killed one after the other…. Every thing I had was just so perfect: the cooking, the taste, the size of the plates and Catalan Cuisine which brings you émotions…. like in some classical italian trattoria !

Artichauts et calamaritos…

Surtout allez y en bande pour pouvoir vous partager les plats sans chichis et pensez a réserver si vous y aller le week-end…. “los pajaros” me disent que cela risque vite d’être embouteillés….. Bourgognes en veux tu en voilà, Champagne ( encore les Tarlants, toujours dans les bon coups ceux là )  ) Italie avec de beaux vins originaux, et enfin des vins d’Espagne et de Catalogne digne d’intérêts. En terme de budget on trouves des tapas à partir de 4-6 € et l’on peut déjeuner pour 20€ mais bon.. soyons sérieux 5 minutes, si vous aimez les vins et vu les tarifs pratiqués vous ne pourrez pas résister et vous lâcher… vous ne serrez pas déçus… DON’T go on your own…share these beautiful tapas and wines with your mates. BOOK it as it is going to be THE PLACE in Catalonia… Burgundies outstanding, Champagne so friendly in prices and delicious Italians, French and of course some unusual wines from Catalonia and Spain. Prices are very civilized…it’s just that I drink like a fish and eat as well so the bill is …  still correct !!

Je ne peux pas résister…. encore une dernière… “pigeon et haricots”…. A last one…

Profitez en bien, je vous recommande de trouver un bon hôtel dans le quartier car impossible de faire plus de 300 mètres le soir en sortant de ce lieu, sans avoir à tomber dans les bras de morphée…. Ce genre de lieux devraient se multiplier pour refaire découvrir “El Vi” aux espagnols et catalans, il y vas de la survie de notre culture catalane ou espagnole, dans ce pays ou l’on ne boit plus que 8 litres par habitant ( 45 litres en France et 18 au Royaume-Uni..)

I would recommend to book a hotel or find a taxi to bring you home… Hope there will be more places like that in Catalonia, because iti si important for us “small pasionate producers” to be able to share our wines and to remote them too.. Spaniards are drinking 8 lit/capita while in UK it is 18 and France 45…. 50 years ago it was 80 liters like in France !!

A few nice days in Barcelona are always a treat and good for my wine business… A nice “café” on the way to Barcelona to start the day and here I am !

Llego al Bed & Breakfeast de Flor en Barcelona -salsas and co, bed and breakfast - después de una cita muy importante….  I arrived at Flor’s B&B in Barcelona -salsas and co, bed and breakfast - after my first meeting of the day. 

.. i dejo mi maleta antes de marchar me para comer con Ramon (Vi-FRANC. Ramon Francàs) en Vilanova i la Geltru en Marejol. Llamo a mi amigo Christophe Brunet  ”Vino, amor y fantasia “ que produce vino en el Priorat “Huellas”, y por suerte pudo venir a comer con nosotros.

… and left my luggages there ,before going for a business lunch with Ramon (Vi-FRANC. Ramon Francàs) in Vilanova i la Geltru at this great restaurant, Marejol, along the seaside. I also called my friend Christophe Brunet  ”Vino, amor y fantasia “ who produces wines in Priorat – “Huellas”-  and he could come to join us for that nice moment.

Jose Gallego el dueño de Marejol nos hizo un “pica-pica” de mariscos excellente que iba muy bien con los vinos blancos como tintos. Comida muy simpatíca y con mucho entusiasme de todos, con buenos vinos que traeron Ramon Francas ( Rioja de garnacha, 2006 exquisito) Christophe y jo…

Jose Gallego Marejol’s owner, proponed us a “Pica-pica” from fresh seafood absolutely OUTSTANDING, which was great with my wine “Sirenes de Cadaqués 2010” and also with the other red wines such as wines from Christophe and the beautiful Garnacha 2006 from Rioja that Ramon brought over.

Tout le village est là: les gens de toujours, les philippins, boliviens, français, anglais, hollandais, belges, marocains, chiliens, etc…. Super ambiance et plein de rencontres d’amis…

The whole village is there; Locals and from Philipines, Bolivia, France, UK, Holland, Maroc, Belgium, Chile, etc…. Great ambiance and plenty of friends I had not seen yet…

Vino Artesano is run by Marc & Malena…Such a little place and a true selection of wines made by ” passionate producers”, so rare in Spain… sorry Catalonia ))

Packed with people outside, and inside, nice Cava’s tasting, delicious stuff with fine bubbles (true Catalan stuff.. not the copy ), plenty of people to meet, but missing some nice friends: Dominique, Christophe, Nuria, Oriol, Pascal, Eric, Fréd, Ingrid, Pierre,  etc…… saw a STAR on my way out ! When I say a “Star”, a star to my standard .. i.e. a great wine producer who has done such work to help spanish wine to be recognized in the world.. Barbier himself !

A tour in barcelonetta for diner… plenty, basic, friendly, fresh food & nice company with Vince “Ze legend”… (i.e. the guy thanks to who “J.M” was made redundant and “Sancho Pancho M.UU” designated as the vilain…)  Good laugh while dining !

Of course being in Barcelona you just can’t go for a drink without kissing Isabelle (at Monvinic)  - especially beeing French !!!  Being introduced to some nice people from the trade & a nice spanish sommelier “Tout est possible”!! First bottle was a delicious “Montilla-Moriles” ( Jerez seco style, on a different terroir..), then a bottle of “Pirata”, just the normal stuff for a “Corsaire’s meeting”, and to finish a delicious easy drinking red wine made in France…. yes some time they can do good stuff even in the south of France: light color, elegant, fruity and with some sort of guts:  www.lesclosperdus.com

A bit late… crawl to reach my B&B, that I will recommend with pleasure: “Salsas and Co“ ….. ZZZZZZZZZZZ……zzzzzzzzz………ZZZZZZZZZZ…… No noise… great sleep and nice breakfast …. Great time in Barcelona but time to go back to ze Bodega… meetings, tastings, printer: Have to sort out a problem for my label “Sirenes de Cadaqués” as someone in the DO is apparently jalous of the name…. Might have to change it. It is just incredible that people are not interested in making “just good wine”, they have also to come and annoy you with delation and tricky things, anyway….. Let’s go for lunch, orders,etc…

End of the day for a walk around Cap de Creus in the wind ( 7-8 beaufort).. Nobody, beautiful light, great wind, nice to clean your brain…mind you, with this wind  in 10 minutes it’s done !

Now, time to see the friends in the village at Garbi’ restaurant and at MUT for a drink and “Julie & the gang” at Tropical !

- In Covent Garden: “The 10 Cases”… This new wine bar in Covent Garden has a policy of 10 whites and 10 reds on their list. Pirata was one of their best wine/feed back so far….. The suckling pig is apparently excelent !  Looks rather nice end very decent prices…Pirata by the glass at 6.4£…

The worst wines – Les vins les moins bons – Los vinos mas malos:

- Pauillac – Pichon Longueville Baron: No major problem, but no pleasure, very light for a Pauillac

- Sans défaut, mais sans plaisir. Trés maigre pour un Pauillac.

- Ningun problema mayor, pero sin placer. Super ligero para un Pauillac.

- Pessac-Léognan - Château Smith Haut Lafite: Very light in colour, cacao, moka still present due to to much ageing in oak. round, soft, watery style. Not at all what I am enjoying.

- Robe trés claire, cacao et moka au nez du a un élevage trop important. Bien que souple et rond, trop liquide. Pas du tout le style de vin qui me fait plaisir.

- Color demasiado claro. Los aromas de Cacao i moka salen pero parece que ques ha permanecido demasiaso en las barricas. El vino es muy ligero – como aigua – y no tengo ningun placer en bever lo.

- Pomerol – Vieux Chateau Certan: Very light colour, taste like a very good Grenache ( ie blend is Merlot & Cab Franc…). Tasted better wines from this very expensive estate.

- Trés léger en couleur, se goute comme un bon Grenache ( Assemblage Merlot Cab Franc.. ), bu de meilleurs millésimes de ce domaine trés cher.

- Color muy clara, i ligero tambien en boca. Parece a una super buena vieja Garnacha ( Cupaje de Merlot i Cab Fanc…). Bevido añadas mucho mas intéressantes de este “Château” super caro..

Noël approche et nous voiçi de nouveau pour une de ces dégustation merveilleuse de 18 Grands vins de Bordeaux: Horizontale 1996. En raison des prix ridiculement exorbitant des cinq 1er cru classé, il n’a pas été possible de les présenter à la dégustation, tant pis pour eux !

My discovery – Mes découvertes – Los vinos que descubrio:

- Saint Emilion 1° Grand Cru Classé – Château Pavie Macquin http://www.pavie-macquin.com/pavie-macquin.htm: Nicolas Thienpont. Beautiful intense & lively color for this wine. Once in the mouth, very structured, “classic” great right bank wine, quite strong character, outstanding bottle !

- Belle robe à la couleur burlat intense, trés jeune. Une fois en bouche trés présent, puissant mais en rapport avec ce qu l’on notait à l’oeil et au nez. Un brin austère mai quelle bouteille !

- Color del vino intensa pero parece todavia muy joven. En boca es potente, suave ..una botella Exceptional !

Estamos cerca de Navidad, y la suerte de catar 18 de los Grandes vinos de la añada 1996 en Burdeos ! Por precios completamente ridiculos, los cinco 1°Grand Crus Classés no estaran en la cata ! Que lastima para ellos !

The one I loved on that day – Mes préférés du jour – Mis preferidos del dia:

- Saint Julien – Château Ducru Beaucaillou : A very classic “Château”, often difficult to enjoy at his best… so here we are, Everything from a Grand Vin: Colour, power, lengh.. a real pleasure.

- Un classique, souvent difficile à apprécier. Là on y est… un vrai plaisir et tout d’un Grand Vin: couleur de la robe, puissance, souplesse, longueur… un Vrai plaisir.

- Un classico entre los ,grandes vinos de Burdeos, pero por una vez que se puede disfrutar. Tiene todas las caracteristicas de un Grande Vino: color, poder de la estructura, suavidad i final largooooooo… Una botella de sueño !

- Pomerol – La Fleur Pétrus http://www.moueix.com/: I drink wines from this estate quite regularly & I have never been dispointed ! A very bright color, very elegant, soft,smooth, velvety, superbe to drink now…

J’ai le plaisir de boire assez réguliérement des vins de ce domaine. Jamais été déçu ! Trés belle robe brillante, fin et trés élégant en bouche, doux et soyeux avec une belle longueur.. Un style tout en dentelle, un vrai délice !

Tengo la suerte de bever vinos de este Château regularmente. Siempre super buenos ! Vino de color muy brillante, muy elegante y suave en boca. Una botella muy rica y mucho placer !

Por la noche fuimos a cenar a “Le Tastemonde”, rue de Suréne, cerca de La Madeleine. El dueño Sylvain y su Staff fueron super simpaticos, y cocina como vinos, muy buenos.

For diner we went to the restaurant Le Tastemonde near La Madeleine. Sylvain the owner and the staff were perfect, food and wine as well.
