Adegga: André Ribeirinho

André Ribeirinho is felling like a Rock Star as he appears in DN , the National portuguese paper !

Adegga is the project that André started. 3 years ago I quit my day job at SAPO and decided to work full-time on this project.

Adegga (Twitter) is an online wine community where anyone can track the wines that are drinking (to help remember later) and share that experience with other people.

  • Adegga now has over 100.000 unique visitors every month and includes over 10.000 tasting notes from its members. Together consumers are changing the wine world by creating a new wine recommendation era where trust and conversation are more important than status.
  • Adegga is now a platform with a soon be released API and Mobile application for the IPhone & Android.
  • Wine producers can use Adegga to talk about their wines, present their winery or launch a new wine. Cortes de Cima and Quevedo are two of wine producers already doing it.

AVIN, an ISBN for Wine

  • The AVIN (Twitter) is a unique identifier for each wine. Think of it as an ISBN for Wine.
  • Like with books, every wine should have a unique number. This will help consumers get more information out of each bottle of wine and help them make smarter decisions.
  • 2 years ago we created the concept of Dynamic Wine Labels allowing anyone with a camera-enabled mobile phone to read the label and access wine reviews, wine prices and a lot more information from anywhere.
  • Cortes de Cima, Quevedo, O’Vineyards were the first to use the AVIN.
  • Now, over 1 million wine labels have been printed with a Dynamic Wine Label including an AVIN and a QRCode
  • Wineries interested in getting an AVIN for their wines should contact us.

For the past decades the everyday consumer has been ignored. I’m not talking about the high end or even weekend wine geek, but rather the consumer who likes wine, wants a better bottle and could give a shit if the wine has terroir or 90+ points. They want to enjoy the wine for what it is, social lubricant,..

The problem is retailers, importers, and the press were all trying to sell the same package of BS that you need to “know wine” to love wine. It’s the teach first drink later model, which I believe leads too often to consumers afraid that they might do something wrong, and as a result they end up simply buying based on price and what the label looks like. Why, because they are the only things not trying to tell them that they aren’t smart enough to enjoy wine. The consumer has choices, or is starting to, and the internet is bringing us these choices.

these consumers now are talking about wine and buying wines, and are doing it with the tools they use to communicate within their social circles everyday.

Facebook, once a college meet up site, is now a place where brands are being built…While in another more recognizable form for many of us we have Social tasting note sites like Adeggaand Cellartracker which are allowing consumers to share online what wines they own and to see what their friends are drinking.

A lot of people laugh at these online tools  but it reminds me of a quote I found online: “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.” This was Western Unions response to the telephones invention.

Ironically similar statements are being made about blogging today. The truth is that we are seeing the fading away of yesterdays’ tools of communication, giving way to a new way of looking at wine.

Today’s consumers have voices. The internet have given them voices, And these voices are not your competitors or enemies, but rather clients, readers, buyers, and sometimes new friends.But the real truth is that the consumer is tomorrows critic. And in the end if they don’t know where Tempranillo comes from it doesn’t matter,  they do know whether or not they like the wine. As a group they have an aggregated voice that is powerful and broad.

they will be the ones to buy your products, and share their thoughts with their friends, just like they always have. If you do not listen to them…you lose. If you choose to engage with them…you win.

Today the internet is also a conversation. It is not monologue it is a dialog. If you are not prepared to engage and talk to your consumer, be prepared for disappointment. Today’s consumer wants a conversation…no they expect one.

« Tonight ( Friday 13th) in the hall of the Rioja Forum in Logrono Robert Parker sat at the head table overseeing a sold out auditorium of 450+ representatives of the wine world eager to share a glass with him. Kevin Zraly, the pre-eminent figure in wine education in the US & Pancho Campo MW, President of the Wine academy of Spain who organised the event, moderated the session. Catavino was there, live-blogging, photographing, tweeting, and recording tasting notes live on adegga.com, and I was part of the team.

He ( Robert Parker)  spoke lucidly and passionately about his love of wines and his unpretentious style and incredible knowledge was somewhat captivating. For Parker the responsibility of the great winemaker is to “capture and translate the essence of your terroir and faithfully respect the vintage given to you by Mother Nature”.

Here are some of the points I like to outline !

David Cunningham from Constellation Europe: « warned against the tendency to obsess over price; the industry should attempt a dialogue with the consumer more about quality than price, which is not easy in times of recession. The wine industry is the well-known drop in per capita wine consumption in the traditional wine-consuming countries. In Spain consumption is down but 72% of consumption is now in the DO’s. This is a challenge but also an opportunity at middle price points. »

Xavier Pagès, Director General Codorniu: « As a group (young or new consumers) they see wine as more sophisticated and have a very skeptical attitude toward the traditional media and have more faith in bloggers. (We at catavino.net wondered if he was aware that as he was saying this, we bloggers were sending his message.) ahahaahhaaaaa !!!!

Richard Halstead CEO of Wine Intelligence ( U.K):  » restaurants are quite simply not doing their job; they are failing to engage wine drinkers as a group and these are the types you want in your restaurants because of their relative buying power. The huge problem is steep prices. There is a trend to eating “well” at home instead of going out. And high wine costs at restaurants clearly influence this trend. »

Tim Hanni M.W.: « Wine experts and sellers should…accept that people react differently to wines and that these different reactions are not a fault of education or culture but are often physiological, a simple matter of the number of buds on the tongue for example. People who hate the smell of sauvignon blanc often have grass allergies. Shoes don’t fit all people, wines don’t either. There are no masters of shoes telling us than a shoe should feel good.

Lisboa EWBC 2009…

Estupendo… genial… completamente perdido…. Necessito pararme i pensar  … dificil !

Great…. superbe….. completely lost.. Just need to  think more… tough !

A long day …   Friday I drived from Bordeaux to Burgos…. arrived and stopped at the first Hotel I saw… good luck: cheap, nice room and nice food & wine: Abadia de San Quirce Ribera del dueroa 2005. Woke up at 7.00 and drove to Lisboa !

Beautiful drive through Spain and some areas I never crossed : Salamanca, ..saw a few pigs eating and running in « La Dehesa »…. I was already thinking of them in my plate !!…north east Portugal…. Lisboa !

Arrival in Lisboa found quite easily the VIP Gran Lisboa… superbe & modern Hotel: VIP Gran lisboa ..feel like a star… Hermés soap, Hermés body care….. great bathroom…. I wanna stay there more !!!

Registration for the EWBC …. met my friend Oscar Quevedo… Met other people: Anthony Swift: WINE PLEASURES WORKSHOP…. Miss Vicky « herself »: Miss Vicky Wine (Photo below…) I am looking for the most important « blogger sommelier in the world »: Emmanuel Delmas, Paris..but I Can’t see him.. What a shame !!

Great tasting with fortified and sweets wine:  Barquero Amontillado (dry) – Lustau Amontillado Escuadrilla – Apostoles Palo cortado – Quevedo Colheita 1994 – Barcalhoa Moscatel Roxo 1999 ( very unique !!) – Justinho’s Madeira Colheita 1995 – Sandeman Vintage 2007  ( just bottled) – Garvey’s Gran orden  PX  (pedro ximenez) !! In 2010 there is a wine show for sweet and fortified wines in Jerez de la Frontera: VINOBLE 2010.
